Pre and co requisites

Level 4 competencies in creating & handling digital media content.

Aims

This module aims to provide a complete experience of the development of a digital media product to a given brief, working in teams that reflect current agile methods with a particular focus on agile scrum. Students will see through a group project from an initial client brief and developing ideas through research and planning to presentation, delivery and evaluation of the product.

Students will have the opportunity to develop:
• a specialist skill in digital media production;
• an awareness of professional production practices and agile methods with a particular focus on agile scrum;
• team working, project management, and transferable communication skills;
• an awareness of user centred design;
• user interface design, prototyping and evaluation;
• a balance between the creative process and formal requirements analysis.

In addition, the module aims to equip students with an appreciation of Ethical, Legal, Social & Professional Issues. Specifically, the module aims to enable students to:
• understand and apply the ethical and social implications of policies and legal standards plus the professional standards and codes of conduct to the production of digital media content;
• appreciate the impact of digital media products on the individual and society;
• awareness of competition benchmarking and risk assessment.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

  1.  Follow and apply the scrum method in the development of a digital media-based product.

  2.  Discuss, evaluate and apply theory, techniques and tools for creating an interactive application appropriate to the digital media industries.

  3.  Effectively communicate ideas and processes using methods appropriate to the digital media industries.

  4.  Examine the skills required to successfully manage and deliver an agile scrum team project.

  5.  Devise, plan, manage and create an interactive product.

Indicative Content

Responding to a brief; brainstorming and ideation techniques; Project management; Team work, managing time, risks, resources and tasks; Structured requirements analysis; User centred design and prototyping; Quality assurance, testing and evaluation methods; contemporary processes including among others agile Scrum, XP,
Devops and open source development; Pre-production, production and post-production methods in the creation of media rich interactive applications; Legal and Ethical issues in the production of digital media products; Product delivery and launch.

Furthermore, the module aims to help students develop their personal and professional skills. In particular, the module aims to enable students to:
• develop high level cognitive skills with respect to relating theoretical concepts to practical implementations;
• develop key transferable skills in problem solving and decision making; communication skills; project management skills; working with others and working to deadlines;
• present work in a variety of ways including a report and demonstrations.

Teaching and learning activity

There will be a wide variety of learning and teaching activities including formal lectures, tutorials, and labs. Students will be provided with formal lectures to provide the framework for labs, which are intended to design, develop and evaluate their product ideas. Tutorials will be available to critique, evaluate and provide feedback on production work.

Outline Details:A group production of a digital media- based artefact using agile scrum concluded with a professional presentation and evaluation of individual participation.

Formative Assessment: Students are supported with demo sessions and informal presentations of their work which are arranged to provide feedback on their progress.

Students are not required to pass all elements of summative assessment in order to pass the module
