COMP1822 Principles of Virtual Reality

Aims

The module will require students to design virtual reality applications, incorporating advanced methodologies to develop suitable applications for particular use case scenario. The module will build on the concepts from Principles of Virtual Reality in the second year, specialising students in the development of Virtual and Augmented Reality applications.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:

  1.  Demonstrate detailed knowledge of Virtual Reality design concepts relevant to explicit use case scenarios.

  2.  Develop a Virtual Reality Application that utilises multimodal interfaces appropriate for a specific brief.

  3.  Evaluate Virtual Reality systems using established taxonomies.

Indicative Content

Introduction to VR and AR gaming.
Evaluating VR Systems and experience: experimental design, UX measures (task, Presence) Content and Interaction design for VR and AR.
Virtual Reality Taxonomies.
Augmented Reality (including location-based AR) Gaming Design and Development for VR and AR.

Coursework - 25%

Individual report evaluating methodologies in an area of Virtual Reality Design and Development.

Coursework - 75%

Pass mark - 40%

Development of a group based application, commissioned with a particular brief, supplemented with an evaluation based on the topics from coursework 1.

Nature of FORMATIVE assessment supporting student learning;
Students will take part in seminars, presentations and testing sessions, as well as producing weekly development of coursework in order to receive feedback.
