Aims
This course aims to introduce the concepts of design, layout; promote understanding of how graphic imagery is utilised across a variety of digital media and introduce students to the visual aspects of web design. In doing this, the course aims to focus on the core skills in design for print media & the ability to create well presented screen design.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course a student will be able to:
Create and present digital media products for print and digital display
Apply suitable design theory to the creation of digital media products
Appraise their digital media work in an informed manner
Demonstrate the origins of your ideas by referencing sources used in your work

Indicative content
This course will cover a range of subject areas, including but not limited to:
General design principles for print and digital media creation;
Layout of printed material;
Layout of screen material;
Typography;
Creation of a range of digital media artefacts;
Creative practices in the development of print and digital media;
Legal, Social and Ethical Issues surrounding the use and creation of digital media;
Professionalism in the digital media industry.

Teaching and learning activity
Due to the practical nature of the course, the learning and teaching activities will be necessarily varied throughout the year. The main theoretical teaching will take place in lectures. Labs will introduce and reinforce practical aspects of the course, again using a mixed delivery model (some purely instructive, others more based around a problem solving approach).
Alongside the formal contact hours students will have extra resource in the form of electronic recording of teaching materials (such as some lectures), podcasts of important exercises.
